In 2016, we’re seeing exciting new trends that breathe new life to the wedding cake ritual; a tradition that has roots all the way back to the 18th century. In fact, the wedding cake is a highly symbolic part of a wedding. The wedding cake symbolizes the ‘breaking of bread’ so to speak and represents the joining of the bride and groom’s family and friends. Pretty cool, right?

Geode Wedding Cakes

Geode wedding cakes are all the rage right now. The unique wedding and event cake design has even been featured on the Today Show! Geode cakes are inspired by naturally forming geode rock formations that have an open cavity lined with crystals. Typically found in sedimentary and volcanic rock, geodes are fairly rare to find.

Using these naturally occurring rock geodes as inspiration, many couples are opting to select a geode cake for their wedding in 2016. With so many color choices available in this design, geode-inspired cakes work perfectly with any wedding theme or color scheme. Check out the incredible artistry below in these cakes.

Metallic Wedding Cake

From fashion to interior design to the wedding space, metallics have taken over as one of the hottest trends in 2016. It’s no surprise metallics have made their way to wedding cakes too! Metallic colors can be incorporated into wedding and event cakes many different ways – as an all over metallic base, as subtle highlights, or as painted designs like the one below. The great thing about using metallics is that they pair well with many different color palettes. No matter what your color theme is you can use metallics to add a subtle color shift and texture to your event.

Galaxy Far Far Away Wedding Cakes

Galaxy cakes are incredibly popular for 2016. These cakes, often thought to be inspired by the massively popular Star Wars and Star Trek series, are great for couples looking for nontraditional wedding cakes and decor. The allure to galaxy cakes is in the hand-painted, dimensional colors used to create the space-like look on the cake. The use of crunchy cake bites as stardust help give the illusion of an alternate universe. If you want your galaxy cake to fit more within your color scheme, just tell your baker to use colors within your color palette to create the swirling galaxy. Using a galaxy cake as your wedding cake will definitely be a highlight of your big day!

Uniquely Shaped Wedding Cakes

The days of only using round wedding cake tiers to make a tiered wedding cake are long gone! Say hello to the future with uniquely shaped wedding cakes. From hexagonal shapes to rectangular shapes to completely unique and custom shapes, wedding and event cakes in 2016 are anything but traditional. Many brides and grooms are opting for custom wedding cake shapes to express their unique personalities and styles – and, many couples are choosing to do different shapes for each tier of their wedding cake!

Gradient Wedding Cakes

One of Fresh From the Kitchen’s favorite new trends for 2016 is gradient cakes. These ombre-inspired cakes are created using varying hues of your primary wedding color to form a beautifully unique wedding cake. This trend stems from the wildly popular rainbow cake that uses different color food dye on each cake layer to create a colorful concoction. The gradient cake is a great alternative to the rainbow cake to add pops of color and still keep within your color scheme.
